The Upper lake now looks pretty clear of ice, from what I hear the lower lake is still frozen over.  Spring is here the northern pike are beginning to move back up the ditches, I don’t know why, I am pretty sure that they are done with their egg laying ritual.  Shotley Brook still has quite a few walleyes left in it so we should have some pretty good fishing right here in the campground next weekend and I have the water turned back on in most of the campground, there are still a couple of spots that froze up shortly after I turned it on but they should thaw by next weekend for sure.

It is hard to believe by the looks of things around here that two weeks from now many fishermen will be getting ready to head back home from Minnesota's walleye fishing opener.
I did not measure just how much snow was on the ground but by the looks of it there had to a foot or more where the wind did not blow it around too much.  There are places up near the lake and in the campground that the snow drifts are 3 and 4 feet deep.
It is suppose to get down below freezing for the next couple of nights; if that is the case I find it hard to believe that I could have the water turned back on in the campground by May 1st.

"Just a couple days ago this ditch was full of walleyes and northern pike..."

"Shotley Brook by our house is now frozen over, if you were here
you can still see the walleyes swimming under the ice..."

Monday, April 21, 2008   The ice pack is finally moving out, just a few more days and we should have open water.  Shotley Brook has been full of northern pike for a few days now and the walleyes are just starting to make their move upstream.
The past couple of days Andy and Tony from the DNR have been trapping and measuring some of the pike that were coming into Shotley Brook, quite a site to see. Today I snapped a couple of photos of their operation, I think you may find them interesting.

They set the trap on friday and by Saturday they had over 100 northern pike and 300 plus walleye...

Tony taking the pike out of the trap to be measured...

After measuring each fish and taking a few scales off of some back into the river they go...

Quite a few of these fish were 40 inches or more...
